While driver deaths are continuing to rise, smaller vehicles still pose as the largest risk per the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Looking at data from the 2014 model year, the number of deaths per million, was 30. That is 2 more than 28 per million in 2011. But the range of deaths by vehicle deaths vary, dramatically. 11 vehicles had 0 driver deaths for the 2014 model year. The 11 vehicles are:

  • rear-wheel drive BMW 535i
  • BMW 535xi xDrive
  • Jeep Cherokee 4×4
  • Lexus CT 200h
  • front-wheel Lexus RX 350
  • front-wheel drive Mazda CX-9
  • Mercedes-Benz M-Class 4Matic
  • Toyota Tacoma Double Cab Long Bed 4×4
  • front-wheel Volkswagen Tiguan

The models with the most deaths per million were:

  • Hyundai Accent sedan (104)
  • Kia Rio sedan (102)
  • Scion tC (101)
  • Chevrolet Spark (96)
  • Nissan Versa (95)

The IIHS believes that the increase in deaths is related to the economic recovery of the United States, that allows more people to fill up at the pump and travel.
