Semi-Trailer Guards Save Lives, Study Shows
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has concluded that strong side guards mounter on the rear of tractors, will save lives. Also, well built guards can eliminate the possibility that vehicles get trapped under the tractors. The Institute ran two tests, one with an AngelWing reinforced side protector, and one with a carbon fiber device used for improving aerodynamics. The results were drastically different. In both tests, a vehicle struck a 53′ trailer, at 35 mph. With the fiberglass skirt, not only did the vehicle slide under the trailer, but the sedans roof was sliced off, too. In a real world scenario, all passengers in that vehicle would likely have sustained fatal injuries. In the AngelWing test, the guard bent however the vehicle was unable to go under the trailer.
