FMCSA Prepares for Malfunction Protocol
Phones, Computers, and Tablets are all wonderful pieces of technology until they malfunction. A simple restart might be enough to solve the problem, but on the road the “fixing” process will potentially be much more difficult. All computers fail at some point, so it only makes sense to prepare drivers for what to do when their ELD fails on them. Regulators say that a driver must provide the carrier with a written notice within 24 hours. The driver then is responsible for keeping a paper log in the meantime until the carrier fixes the device. per FMCSA rules, the carriers have up to 8 days to properly repair the device.
