Lobbyists Spending Money Convincing Lawmakers
Highway safety advocates say that lobbyists have paid lawmakers large sums of money to ban the requirement of safety devices. One such example, are rails installed on the side of commercial vehicles that prevent vehicles from being able to slide under the trucks. While noted that the best safety rails are ones never used, the trucking industry opposes these proposed safety devices. Under-ride collisions kill hundreds of people every year. Advocates believe this is a safety device is cost effective, and will ultimately save lives. It is noted that Senate Members in the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee have received over $9 million dollars in donations last election cycle.
