While some agencies advocate against taking home police vehicles, Wilmington sees the good in it. The Individual Vehicle Assignment Plan (IVAP) established in 2005, allows officers to take home vehicles after 2 years of service. Officers who have not met the requirements, share vehicles. Before this program, vehicles would run all day and be passed on to the next officer to run all night. The wear and tear from the extreme daily use was putting cars out of commission in 3-5 years. But Under the IVAP program where cars are used less, cars are able to last 6-10 years.
