Orders Down 1.1%

Following a strong December, Classes 5 to 7 Medium-Duty truck orders dropped by just over 1%. In 2016 customers ordered 228,500 trucks, almost identical to 2015. ACT Researchers believes that these sales have outpaced heavy-duty trucks, because of a large demand from government fleet purchasers. December was the second strongest month of 2016, but has historically been a strong month for sales. Class 8 Trucks are down 24% but ended a 22 month decline. The ACT also believes that housing activity and auto production are indicators of medium duty truck growth. Steve Tam believes that medium-duty trucking is less volatile than heavy-duty trucking, but a lag in government funds increases the smaller vehicles numbers.
